You know how you sometimes wish you had an assistant who could just do things on your computer instead of you having to do them yourself? Like, not just answer questions, but actually click around, open apps, copy information, and complete tasks while you go make a sandwich? That’s essentially what Perplexity just released for Mac users. Their “Personal Computer” feature lets an AI agent actually operate your computer — navigating your screen, running searches, pulling together information — rather than just chatting with you in a text box. Think of it like the difference between asking a friend for directions versus handing them the wheel.

This is part of a bigger shift happening in AI right now, moving from tools that talk to tools that act. Until recently, most AI assistants were like very smart reference books — great at answering questions, useless at doing your laundry. These newer “agentic” systems can string together multiple steps on their own. You say “find me the three cheapest flights to Denver next weekend and put them in a spreadsheet,” and instead of giving you instructions on how to do that, it just… does it. It’s still early days and these tools make mistakes, so you wouldn’t want to leave one running your bank account unsupervised, but for research and information tasks they’re genuinely useful right now.

So how could you actually use this to save time or make money? First, if you do any kind of market research — comparing prices, scouting competitors, gathering product reviews — this kind of tool can do hours of browser tab work in minutes, which for a small business owner is real money saved. Second, freelancers who write, consult, or create content could use it to handle the tedious background research portion of client projects, letting them take on more work without burning out. Third, if you’re job hunting, you could have it pull together detailed notes on companies you’re interviewing with, saving you the prep time and honestly making you look sharper in the room. None of these require any technical skill — if you can describe what you want done, you can use this.

The bottom line: AI is graduating from helpful chatbot to actual digital coworker, and the people who figure out which of their boring tasks to hand off first are going to have a real edge.
