So Apple is apparently working on letting you swap out the AI brain powering your iPhone the same way you’d choose a default browser. Instead of being locked into whatever Apple decides is best, you’d be able to pick from different AI models — think of it like choosing between different coffee shops instead of being forced to use the one in your building. Want Google’s AI handling your emails? Sure. Prefer a different model for summarizing articles? Go for it. Apple would essentially become the platform that hosts the competition rather than the only player on the field.

This matters because right now, most people don’t realize they’re already using AI constantly on their phones — autocomplete, photo organization, voice assistants, suggested replies. The difference is you’ve had zero say in which system is doing that work. Giving people a choice is like going from having one TV channel to having a remote control. You probably won’t switch constantly, but knowing you can is genuinely useful, especially as different AI models get better at different things.

Here’s how regular people and small business owners can actually benefit from this shift:

Save money on subscriptions. Right now many people pay for multiple AI tools — maybe ChatGPT for writing and something else for images. If your phone lets you plug in free or cheaper AI models for everyday tasks, you could potentially drop a paid subscription you only use occasionally. Keep an eye on which models Apple supports when this launches and audit what you’re currently paying for.

Small business owners: match the tool to the task. A bookkeeper running a small shop might find one AI model handles number-related questions better while another is stronger at drafting customer emails. When your phone becomes a switchboard for different AI models, you can route different work to whichever tool does it best — without paying for a fancy all-in-one business software package.

Get better results from your phone without learning anything new. If you’ve ever tried Siri and given up, this could be your second chance. When you can swap in a more capable AI model for voice tasks or writing assistance, your phone actually becomes more useful for things like drafting a quick quote for a client or organizing your to-do list — no new app downloads, no new passwords, just a better result from the device you already own.

The best tech upgrade you’ll get this year might just be the freedom to finally choose what’s running quietly in the background.
